AEO vs GEO: two names for one job — and the few places the difference matters
AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same goal: getting AI assistants to mention and recommend you. The names come from different moments — AEO from featured snippets and voice assistants, GEO from a 2023 paper on generative search — and today they are used interchangeably. SEO is the layer underneath both.
The short answer
There is no practical difference in 2026. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) both mean getting AI assistants to mention, cite and recommend you. AEO is the older term, from featured snippets and voice assistants; GEO comes from a 2023 research paper on generative search. Vendors pick one for marketing reasons. SEO is the foundation under both.
The confusion is common: US Google searches for "AEO vs GEO" rose from about 720 a month in September 2025 to about 2,400 in August 2026, and the various "SEO vs AEO vs GEO" orderings add another 1,400 or so (Google Ads data via DataForSEO). The question behind most of them is "is this one thing or two, and which should I pay for?"
Where the names come from
| Term | Origin | Originally meant |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Mid-1990s | Ranking pages in search results |
| AEO | Late 2010s, with featured snippets and voice assistants | Being the direct answer: the snippet above results, the sentence Alexa or Siri reads out |
| GEO | 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., Princeton and others) | Being cited in answers written by generative engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity |
The GEO paper is worth knowing about because it tested specific changes. Across its benchmark, adding citations to credible sources, quotations and statistics to a page raised its visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, while old-style keyword stuffing did not help (arXiv 2311.09735). Those findings now inform both "AEO" and "GEO" practice.

The merged cells are the point: in practice the AEO and GEO columns describe the same work.
How they fit together
When the difference still matters
The labels do not matter, but two real distinctions sometimes hide behind them:
Google's AI surfaces vs chat assistants
AI Overviews and AI Mode build answers from Google's own index, so classic Google SEO strength carries further there. Chat assistants draw on a wider mix — their own crawlers, Bing, the model's training — and weigh third-party mentions more. A provider who only says "AEO" may mean Google's AI surfaces only; ask.
Answers with search vs answers from memory
When an assistant searches, a page published this week can be cited this week. When it answers from what the model learned in training, changes take months and come from how consistently the web describes you over time. Good work targets both; quick wins come from the first.
Other names you will see
- AIO — "AI optimization", an umbrella term; sometimes short for optimizing for Google AI Overviews.
- LLMO — "large language model optimization", the same idea named after the technology.
- AI SEO, LLM SEO, ChatGPT SEO — SEO teams' names for the same work, usually with more on-site focus.
- AI search visibility — what is being measured: how often and how well you appear in AI answers.
What to ask any provider, whatever they call it
- Which engines do you measure, and how often? One engine once a month is not a measurement.
- Which buyer questions, and who writes them? They should cover the problem, the category, comparisons and your brand.
- Do you work off-site? Review sites, directories, roundups, communities — or only your pages?
- Who does the work that needs a person? Registrations, outreach, community answers, editing.
- How will we know it worked? Named rate on fixed questions, accuracy of facts, and AI referral traffic — not a proprietary score.
- What will you never do? Fake reviews and sock-puppet accounts should be an immediate no.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
Historically, AEO meant winning direct answers — featured snippets, voice assistants — and GEO meant being cited by generative engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. In 2026 the two overlap almost completely and most agencies and tools use them as synonyms.
Which one should I invest in, AEO or GEO?
Neither as a separate budget line. Invest in the work: being readable for AI crawlers, consistent facts, answer-shaped pages, and presence on the third-party sites AI cites. Any provider worth hiring does all of it whatever they call it.
Where does SEO fit with AEO and GEO?
Underneath. AI engines that search the web rely on crawling and search indexes, so technical SEO and useful content remain the base layer. AEO and GEO add answer formatting, entity consistency and off-site presence.
What is AIO?
Usually 'AI optimization' — a third umbrella name for the same work. Sometimes it means optimizing for Google AI Overviews specifically. Ask which engines and which deliverables are included.
