What is AEO? Answer engine optimization, explained for marketers
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode — cite your content and recommend your product when people ask questions in your category. SEO competes for a position on a results page; AEO competes to be part of the answer itself.
AEO in one paragraph
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making AI assistants mention, cite and recommend your brand when people ask questions in your category. It covers your own site (so AI can read and quote it), your facts (so AI repeats them correctly) and the third-party pages AI draws on (so you are present where the answer is assembled). The same work is also called GEO, generative engine optimization — the two names are used interchangeably.
In marketing, AEO matters because the question "which tool should I use for…" is moving from a search box to a chat. A buyer who asks ChatGPT gets one written answer with three to eight products in it. If you are not one of them, there is no page two to fall back on.
Search interest reflects the shift. In the US, Google searches for "what is AEO in marketing" grew from about 590 a month in September 2025 to about 1,600 in August 2026, and "AEO vs GEO" from about 720 to 2,400 (Google Ads data via DataForSEO).
What counts as an answer engine
Any system that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. In 2026 the ones that matter for buyers are:
| Engine | Where answers come from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | The model's own knowledge plus live web search | The largest share of AI assistant use |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's index, through many sub-searches | Shown above ordinary results for a large share of queries |
| Gemini | Google Search grounding | Built into Android, Chrome and Workspace |
| Claude | The model's knowledge plus web search | Heavily used by technical and B2B buyers |
| Perplexity | Live web search, every answer cited | Research-minded users; sources are always visible |
| Copilot | Bing's index | Built into Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365 |
They do not agree with each other. In a study of 596,723 prompts answered by two or more engines, 67.4% of brand names appeared on more than one engine, but only 10.2% of cited URLs did (Rankability). Being named by one engine says little about the others.
How an answer engine picks its sources
When an engine searches the web, it does not search for the question as typed. It breaks the question into many narrower searches — Google calls this query fan-out — runs them in parallel, picks the best passages from the results and writes one answer from them.
Two consequences shape all of AEO:
- Ranking for the main keyword is not enough. An analysis of 173,902 URLs by Surfer found that 68% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews were not in the top 10 ordinary results for the query. Engines reward the best passage for a sub-question, wherever it ranks.
- Most of the pages read are not yours. Reviews, roundups, directories, publications and community threads outnumber any single company's site. In our measurements, a company's own site supplied 1–5% of the sources AI cited until the buyer named the brand.
When an engine answers without searching, it relies on what the model learned in training. Changing that is slow — it follows the model's training cycle — and it is driven by the same thing: how often and how consistently the web describes you.
The four layers of AEO
1. Technical access
AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot) can reach your pages; important content is in the HTML, not only in JavaScript; sitemaps, llms.txt and structured data describe the site.
2. Facts and entity
Your name, category, pricing, plans, integrations and limits are stated the same way on your site and everywhere else, so the engine has one consistent version to repeat.
3. Answer-shaped content
Pages that answer the sub-questions directly: comparisons, alternatives, "best X for Y", use cases, integration and help pages — with the answer in the first lines and specifics after.
4. Third-party presence
Being named, accurately, on the pages engines cite for your category: review sites, directories, marketplaces, roundups, publications and communities.
The first three are on your site and can be done by a capable SEO or content team. The fourth is outreach, profiles and relationships — usually the biggest lever and the one teams skip.
How AEO is measured
There is no rank tracker for answers, and the same question can get different answers an hour apart. Measuring AEO means sampling:
- Write the buyer questions. Tens to hundreds of questions across the buying stages: the problem, the category, comparisons and alternatives, checking a specific brand.
- Ask several engines, more than once. Answers vary by engine, model version and time of day. Repeat runs show which mentions are stable.
- Record more than "mentioned or not". Position in the answer, how you are described, whether the facts are right, which sources were cited.
- Tie it to traffic. Visits and signups referred by chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and others show which mentions bring customers.
What AEO is not
- Not a replacement for SEO. Engines that search the web depend on crawling and indexes. See AEO vs SEO.
- Not keyword stuffing for chatbots. Pages written for a model rather than for a reader get ignored by both.
- Not buying placement in answers. Answers are not for sale. Some engines show labelled ads next to them — ChatGPT since February 2026, Google around AI Overviews — but that is advertising, a separate channel.
- Not fake reviews or sock-puppet posts. They get found, and then they become what AI says about you.
Where to start
- Ask ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode the five questions a new buyer would ask in your category. Note who is named and which pages are cited. Or run the free check, which does this for you.
- Make sure AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN or firewall, and that your key pages show their text without JavaScript.
- Write down your facts once — what you do, for whom, pricing, plans, integrations — and fix every page that says otherwise.
- List the third-party pages cited for your best questions and the competitors named on them. That list is your off-site plan.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for in marketing?
Answer engine optimization. An answer engine is a system that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice, mostly yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) comes from a 2023 research paper on generative search engines; AEO comes from the featured-snippet and voice-assistant era. Today both names describe the same work. AEO vs GEO explains where the difference still matters.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI assistants that search the web still need to crawl and trust your pages, which is SEO work. AEO adds what SEO does not cover: answer-shaped content, consistent facts, and presence on third-party sites. See AEO vs SEO.
How do you measure AEO?
By asking AI the questions your buyers ask and recording the answers: how often you are named, in what position, with which facts, citing which sources — across several engines, repeated over time.
How long does AEO take to work?
Engines that search the web live can pick up a fixed or new page within days. Third-party mentions take weeks. Changes to what a model knows without searching follow its training cycle and take months.
